My language course in Brighton or - how two simple weeks changed my life

Reportage von

The first thing, that I felt, when I was getting into my airplane to Brighton was excitement. Probably everyone knows, how nervous someone can get, when they are doing their first flight alone and for me, it was the first one. In the end it turned out, that travelling alone isn't even as hard as it seemed to be in the first moment because my whole travel went well, and I easily found the way to the language school.

What surprised me about the language school, was that they really cared about the wellbeing of all students. Normally you have to do a lot by yourself, and you get lost quickly but, in this school, I felt like I was supported the whole way until I didn't need it anymore. Different than I expected for example, I didn't have to explain my situation when I arrived and ask the whole way to my room and about the timetable of the following weeks, instead a kind women picked me up already at the entrance of the residence and explained and showed me everything.
The special thing about the Kings language school was also, that everyone got a certificate of his language level.

Besides the caring staff members, I really liked how many activities were proposed during free time such as playing sport games, tours to several sights or other entertaining activities, there was always something to choose.

In my first week I joined a lot of activities by signing in at the reception. I enjoyed for example entertaining activities like playing laser-tag or a karaoke evening, but also some trips like one to London or to Stonehenge.

All these activities were very nice because we didn't just experience new things and see breathtaking sights, but also I got to know a lot of new people with whom I became close friends during my stay.

Brighton was in my opinion a good choice because it is a cute city, that is not too big but also not too remote with beautiful lanes and an openminded atmosphere. Consequently, it was also easy to reach the most places by bus or train.

It was a nice place to stroll through the streets, go shopping or just relax in one of the parks or at the beach. I often went out with some friends to the beach to Brighton Pier, where we either spent our evenings talking at the beach or in the amusement park.

A few times we even borrowed the basketball of the residence and played in the Preston Park, which was just around 15 minutes away from the residence.

The residence itself was a pretty good place to live. Everyone had a single chamber with the basic things such as a bed, desk, wardrobe and a small bathroom. Even if the rooms were quite tiny, it didn't really matter, because I spent the most time with the other people of the language school either playing table-tennis or talking in the cafeteria or outside the building. The food in the cafeteria was mostly good, I really appreciated that there was proposed also some typical British food. Overall, I liked the various buffet for breakfast.

Besides the chambers, the reception, two common rooms and the cafeteria, there were the classroom, where we took our lessons from Monday to Friday. Although I expected the lessons to be as exhausting as in my school in Germany, they were quite easy, because the focus was more on improving the language by talking (also with games) instead of just learning vocabulary and grammar. Also, the teachers that I had were friendly, most of the time patient and, I liked that the most, always in a motivated and good mood.

Different than in school, there luckily weren't big classes with 30 people, but small courses with a nice number of students. Since in my course were just 7 people, the atmosphere was relaxed and not noisy. With this small number it was also easier to get to know the other classmates closer. I really liked that there were so many nationalities, for example in our course we had people from Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Czech Republic, Denmark and even one Korean girl.

In conclusion I didn't regret even once that I decided to this language course in Brighton because I got to know lots of new people from almost every nationality and many of them became my friends. It was an amazing experience at which I not only improved my English by all the talking every day, but at the same time I had breathtaking two weeks with lots of incredible and funny experiences. I can't recommend it highly enough because for me it opened a new world and gave me useful experiences, many new friends and a lovely time.
